I once had the motor quit around 45 mph, in traffic, while I tried unsuccessfully to get the bike into 5th gear with the clutch disengaged. I've since increased the idle speed and tightened all exhaust connections in hope of not having that unpleasant exerience again. My testing seems to indicate that the changes were helpful. And I've learned to pay much more attention to shifting at such speeds, trying to remember to be prepared for trouble so I can react instantly. So far, so good.

By the way, I, too, suspect that the addition of the fifth gear was done on the cheap: if that's true, Suzuki should be ashamed of creating a safety risk to save a few engineering and re-tooling bucks.

Be careful out there. And come on, spring! (Too much snow, ice, and salt to ride here now.)
